The 4th European Regional Symposium of the International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA) successfully concluded
From May 1 to May 5, 2026, the 4th European Regional Symposium of the International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA) took place in Jelgava, Latvia, bringing together 89 veterinary medicine students from 15 European countries. Participants arrived from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, and Sweden.
The symposium was organized by 11 students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU), who are also members of the IVSA Latvia team. The organizing committee prepared a five-day program combining academic activities, practical workshops, cultural experiences, and international collaboration opportunities.
The first day of the symposium, May 1st, was dedicated to welcoming participants and coordinating their arrival in Jelgava. The evening concluded with a shared dinner and interactive activities, creating an opportunity for students to get to know one another and establish international connections.
On the second day, the official opening ceremony of the symposium took place, attended by the Rector of Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, Irina Arhipova. Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to explore the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, take part in the Regional Meeting where important topics regarding IVSA activities in Europe were discussed, and participate in both the Silent Auction and the Cultural Evening, during which each country presented its traditions and culture.
The third day offered participants the opportunity to explore the city of Jelgava and visit some of its most notable locations and cultural sites. Later, students attended lectures focused on current topics in veterinary medicine. In the evening, international participants experienced Latvian culture more closely by learning Latvian folk dances with Folk dance ensemble “Kalve”.
The fourth day focused on practical workshops, lectures, and continued Regional Meeting activities. In the evening, participants attended the traditional “White T-Shirt Party,” which became one of the most memorable moments of the symposium. During the event, students wrote messages and wishes on each other’s white shirts, symbolizing the friendships and international connections formed throughout the event.
On the final day, May 5th, participants attended one additional lecture before departing for their home countries, concluding five intensive and experience-rich days in Jelgava.
The organizers emphasize that international events of this scale provide valuable opportunities for professional development, intercultural communication, and strengthening collaboration within the field of veterinary medicine across Europe.
The symposium’s main supporters and sponsors were Royal Canin, Purina, Zoetis, Universitātes VetFonds and Hotel “Zemgale”.
